Moving money for the planet

In a nutshell

Friends of the Earth and Huddlecraft collaborated to create Money Movers - a movement of women and allies taking climate action with their personal finances, using the power of peer support.

The project adapted and applied the Huddle model quite significantly, clustering multiple peer groups behind a shared mission. To date, participants in Money Movers have moved over £3.3 million for the planet.

Purpose

The spark that led to the Money Movers Huddles was a recognition that the role of finance is crucial in solving the climate crisis. Banks, insurers and pension providers invest £billions of our money in financing fossil fuels, but changing behaviours in personal finance is really hard. People rarely switch or alter their habits.

The Huddles responded to research that demonstrated when women engage with their finances they are more likely to choose values-based investments, but they often lack confidence in making investment decisions and challenging financial institutions.

Participants joined Huddles to feel more empowered to talk about money, to understand green finance and to take action on their personal finances, with environmental impact in mind.

Peers

Hosts of the Huddle were women and allies who held an active interest in greening their finances and who had capacity to gather a small group of women for three sessions. Hosts needed to be available for two host training sessions in which Huddlecraft introduced them to huddling and the curriculum.

Women and allies across the UK and globally were invited to participate in the Huddles. The majority of Huddles were held online, which allowed for greater participation, however many were held in-person.

People came to the Huddles from across sectors and spaces. Participants were varied in age and life stage, which made these Huddles unique in terms of the mix of generational input.
